Queen Astorie sat in her uncomfortable, stiff throne as she waited for her subjects to arrive. She had decided to set aside one day a week to allow her subjects to come to her with complaints and suggestions. Today would be the first of these "open sessions" as she had called them. There were pages sent out to all the surrounding communities to inform them of today. Astorie hoped that this would help settle the worries that she was a young, uncaring ruler. Because that simply was not true. Queen Astorie cares deeply for her subjects and everything she has done over the past 5 years has been to help her country become stronger. People do not understand how difficult my job is. She thought. Astorie had often wished she could go explore the country side and visit with the common people. Unfortunately, her work kept her very busy and her advisors constantly kept her on her toes. If Astorie showed any weakness there would be an uprising surely to follow. She had a firm grasp on the nobility finally, but there was always unrest somewhere in the ranks. For example, she had just appointed a new general to her army. He seemed more than capable as he had fought and won many battles in his younger days. There were many people who were upset by such a dramatic change in military but her soldiers needed to be prepared for any upcoming fights with the neighboring king. Upon thinking of this, Astorie started to fret again because she did not want any of her people to go to war for her. Before she could get too distraught though, the first subject entered for the open session. She smiled as the person entered and waited for them to speak.

Alexander stood towards the back of the hall waiting as Queen Astorie sat down on her thrown. His father sent him to the castle this week to settle some matters with the Queen. Alexander was afterall, the son of the highest Duke in the Queensland. Alexanders goal this week was to increase the grain Queen Astorie bought from his father. Alexanders father knew he was not very good at getting things done so he was frustrated when the Duke insisted he go in place of his older, more responsible brother. Although Alexander was 28, he most certainly did not act it. And for what reason should he? He would never inherit his fathers land or title so he might as well enjoy his life. The was a shuffle as the first subject entered to speak with the Queen. This drew Alexanders attention to her. He noticed Queen Astorie looked frustrated or worried. He was not quite sure what was going on in her head. He was still surprised the young Queen had not completely obliterated the country yet. Things have actually gone well since she has been Queen he thought to himself. Then he went back to watching the Queen and hoped the proceedings of the rest of the morning would swish by. His appointment with the Queen was in 3 hours. He could deal with listening to petty complaints for that long. Surely he thought.

Today was Sarin's first day in the castle. She was nervous as she walked into the throne room and saw Queen Astorie sitting in her throne. Sarin walked forward and curtsied low. Sarin rose and began "Your Highness, I come here today to start my training as a lady in waiting. I am very pleased that I would chosen to serve in your household. I will make you proud and I will be a loyal servant to you." Sarin curtsied again and quickly stood up. As Sarin waited for the Queen's response, she thought about her preparation to this moment. Her family had worked weeks to build her a suitable wardrobe which dresses, undergarments, hair pieces, and shoes. The jewelry would come later because it was far too expensive for her family, Sarin was lucky to be here at all. It was a gift to simply not stand out completely. Today, Sarin wore a faded but pretty tan gown with intricate stitching. Her hair was piled high on her head in what she hoped was the latest fashion, and pinned into place using the pin her grandmother had given to her. Her shoes were a little small but were well hidden under the dress if she could only remember to stay off the heel of her feet she would be able to make it through the day without looking like a fool.

Astorie looked at the young girl in front of her and was confused. She did not state her name or where she had served before. She waited to speak until her adviser confirmed her story was true and told her a few small details. "Welcome. I am happy to have you in my household. You are the baker's daughter Sarin correct? I have heard many things about your fathers baking and have heard what a great family you have. I hope you enjoy working for my household. If you would like to go to the second floor servants chambers, someone will show you to the room you will use while with us." Astorie felt bad that she did not remember that this girl was coming today and that her adviser needed to remind her of the small things. The chances were that she would never see the young girl again because the castle, and her household were so large.

Sarin nodded when the Queen asked her if she were the bakers daughter. Many people around here knew of her fathers baked goods or had personally had them. To her, no one was able to bake better than he could. When the Queen dismissed her she curtsied and slowly backed out of the expansive room. As she followed the servant in front on her she pondered what would happen during her time at the castle. The Queen seemed to be very nice even though Sarin noticed she didn't quite remember she was suppose to be there today. She understood though, Queens have many responsibilities to consider. The walk to the second floor was long and confusing. The castle was quite large.

Astorie watched the young girl leave and thought of how fascinating it must be to be so in awe of everything around you. She had grown up here and had never learned to truly appreciate what she had. Although she knew others did not have the things she did, she did not fully comprehend it. Astorie felt like the morning was just dragging on and she was ready for her lunch with the few friends she had.
